Packages of documents

A package is a set of templates that generate together, in a fixed order, on the file types you choose. Packages have their own tab on the Templates page.

Where packages live

Open Templates and choose the Packages tab, beside Document. Anyone who can see document templates can see packages; there is no separate permission.

The list on the left works the way the Document tab's does: search at the top, Add package beside the search box, and one row per package showing its name, how many documents it holds and the file types it shows on.

Creating a package

  1. 1Click Add package.
  2. 2Give it a name and a description, and pick where it Shows on — the file types it will be offered for. A package needs a name and at least one file type before it can be created.
  3. 3Click Create package. The package opens ready to edit, with only its documents left to choose.

Reading and editing

A package opens read-only. Nothing on the page can be changed until you choose Edit — packages are firm-wide, so a stray click should not rewrite one.

  • Edit arms the name, the file types, the description and both document columns.
  • Discard reloads the package as it is stored, or removes a new package that has never been saved. It asks first when there is something to lose.
  • Save writes the package and returns to reading.

Leaving the page, or switching to another tab, with unsaved edits asks whether to save, discard or stay.

Choosing the documents

The pane shows two columns. In this package on the left is what will generate, in the order it will generate. Library on the right lists every template that can show on the package's file types. In edit mode, drag a row, or click its position badge and type a new position, to move it, and click a Library template to add it.

Each document in the package can carry a rule saying when it is suggested. Click the When… line under a document to set one; with no rule, the document is offered on every file the package applies to.

Shows on, and stranded documents

Shows on decides two things at once: which file matters offer the package, and which templates the Library column will let you put in it.

Removing a file type can strand documents already in the package — documents that could never generate on what is left. The pane says so in an amber banner, the package's row in the list wears a can't show chip, and saving takes those documents out and tells you how many. Tick the file type back instead if that was not what you meant.

Testing a package

Test in the header opens a panel beside the package's contents, in place of the Library column (on a narrow screen it opens over them), and runs the whole package against a real file matter, so you can see what each document would say before anyone generates it. Closing the panel changes nothing. A package has to be saved before it can be tested.

Templates have their own Settings and Test buttons in the same place — see Document template basics.
